Music Video Analysis

Storyline,Location,Casting

Storyline
A couple split up, they are seen hugging in a clearing and then the girl runs through the woods out of fear and hysteria. She then runs towards a river and jumps in, she is then seen jumping backwards and floating in the river. However, the whole music vide will be watched in reverse so the audience view the river scene first and the embrace last.
  • End - an embrace - stop motion? Showing it not to be real but in the past
  • Video begins:
  • Girl lying in river with a floaty dress
  • Band (drummer and guitarist) sitting on a log in the woods, drummer playing the drums on a log
  • Back to the girl- slow movements in the river showing the fabric of her dress moving
  • Whole video shot in reverse, seen floating out the river (dry dress)
  • Running backwards along path to the woods
  • Shot of band again
  • Girl walking/ running backwards in woods
  • Falls over and is seen lying on the ground
  • Walking backwards
  • Ducks under logs
  • Another shot of the band
Location possibilities:
  • Henley by the river
  • Shiplake by the river
  • Wargrave Bowsey woods
  • Henley pathway between river and station (wooded area)
Cast:
1x girl (Skinny, angular face, wearing dark makeup, in a floating white dress, blonde)
1 Boy ( wearing shirt and trousers, also angular face, good chemistry with the girl)
2 Band members

Back Cover Inspiration

We wanted to use correct information for our back cover of the digipack. We are aware that the music from the album was used in the Richard Ayode film "Submarine" and wished to include that in the information.
We found the actual album back cover and took the information from there to copy into our own.

For artistic reasons, we didn't include all the companies listed on the actual back cover as it would have made our creation looked to cramped and busy. Therefore we only included the record company "Domino" as well as film 4 and "Uk film council, lottery funded." Unfortunately, from this image we were unable to read the production information, and to compromise we found an album back cover from Arctic Monkeys "Humbug" and incorporated the information from there, as they are both under the Domino record label and both have "Alex Turner" as their guitarist/lead singer

Album Cover Inspiration

We had to ideas for the album cover. We initially got inspiration from the album cover of "Beachcomber's windowsill" by 'Stornoway.' The idea involving a cut out image filled with the background from another image.

After using this idea, we came across the cover of Colplay's "Mylo Xyloto" which uses the same idea yet adds a further texture, as if it is two definite layers which involves shadow. We liked the idea of this gap and tried to incorporate it into our own album cover.

As our music video revolves mainly around the woods and nature, we felt it vital to include that aspect into our art work. We used an image from one of our location shots as the background and used a cut out of a tree as the main image.

Shooting Schedule

Our aim was to take footage every tuesday and thursday afternoon during our Media Study lessons ( 2 hours a week) however, due to the nature of our video being in reverse, the technicality of our filming was a lot trickier than expected and we needed more time than we imagined. We need to use short shots, which as expected takes longer to film, we also need to be sure than continuity is always there.

Due to the weather at the time, for health and safety reasons we were unable to film the river scene within the time we allotted to ourselves. We therefore drew up another schedule for after the Christmas holidays for us to film the said scene.

Risk Assessment

Mise-En-Scene

There are two key locations within our video.
1. The woods
used throughout the video as where most of the footage was taken. With a clearing which conveys a definite path relating back the choices mentioned in the song. The whole video deals with nature, and this is seen through the other locations.
2. The river.
It is used in the first scene of the video (end of the story) where the girl is seen to be floating in it. I thought using the river would be good for several reasons. Fitting to the outside and natural theme, a river is seen as one of the dangers of the outside - although picturesque it has a dangerous side and that is what i wanted to convey through using it within the music video and it represents the qualities of the protagonist within out video.

Pace and Effects

"Piledriver Waltz" by 'Alex Turner' is a relatively slow paced song, because of this the video has to match the song. It is quite somber and mellow and therefore by creating a video with flashing lights and quick movements wouldn't fit the song choice. We have chosen to use a very unsaturated colour scheme, almost black and white. This is to keep in some of the autumn colours captured in the footage, yet also to keep the atmosphere of the song. By having the video overly saturated would possibly distract from our interoperation of the song to mean heartache and depression.

Inspiration from Other Music Videos

Although hard to tell in this screen shot, I used the idea from "The Scientist" by 'Coldplay' of having the video in reverse. This adds a very different aspect to the audience who can see the video from a different view point. Knowing the end before acknowledging the start of the story. This effect will work well with our video as there is a definite story to our video following the 'television bard' theory.

Inspiration from Other Music Videos

I got a lot of my ideas from other music videos. One of my ideas came from "Don't Leave Home" by 'Dido' with the persona floating in the river. I like both the camera angles, how the image doesn't reveal the whole person but gradually pans to show her. Also, the movement of her dress looks effective contrasting with her still body. I wish to incorporate these ideas in my video.
